What are Shelving Systems?

What are Shelving Systems?

Shelving systems are structural systems used to meet storage needs. They can usually be made of metal, wood or plastic materials and come in various types. The most common shelving systems include pallet racking systems, retail shelving systems, smart shelving systems and mobile shelving systems.

Pallet Racking Systems:

Ideal for storing large and heavy loads, pallet racking systems are based on shelving layers on top of pallets. This system is often used in large facilities such as warehouses or factories and provides high-capacity storage to optimize storage space.

Retail Shelving Systems:

Commonly seen in stores or supermarkets, retail shelving systems are designed to display products and facilitate consumer access. They can come in different shapes and sizes and usually have open designs to increase the visibility and accessibility of products.

Smart Shelving Systems:

With the advancement of technology, smart shelving systems are becoming increasingly popular. These systems use innovative technologies such as sensors, IoT (Internet of Things) and data analytics to optimize storage spaces and facilitate inventory management.

Mobile Shelving Systems:

Mobile shelving systems are systems that can move shelf layers to maximize storage space. These systems are ideal for providing maximum storage capacity in narrow spaces and ensure efficient use of storage space.

Each type of shelving system is designed to meet specific storage needs and offers advantages depending on the usage scenario.

Material Selection of Shelving Systems

Material selection of shelving systems includes a number of factors such as the type of products to be stored, the characteristics of the storage environment, cost factors and durability requirements.

  • Material Durability: The weight and characteristics of the products to be stored are important in terms of the material durability of the shelf systems. For example, metal shelf systems may be more suitable for heavy loads, while plastic or wooden shelf systems may be preferred for lightweight products.
  • Environmental Factors: Humidity, temperature and other environmental conditions of the storage environment can affect material selection. For example, metal shelf systems can be resistant to rust, while wooden shelf systems can be affected by moisture.
  • Cost: Material selection is often dependent on cost factors. While metal shelf systems can generally be more expensive, plastic or wooden shelf systems can offer a more economical option.

Racking Systems Installation and Setup

The installation and setup of racking systems can vary depending on the type of racking system to be used. However, in general, some steps for racking systems installation and setup may include:

  1. Preparing the Area: The area where the racking system will be installed must be cleaned and leveled. Make sure the walls and floor are level.
  2. Reviewing the Assembly Instructions: Racking systems usually come with assembly instructions. These instructions should be carefully reviewed and the steps should be followed correctly.
  3. Assembling the Parts: The parts of the racking system must be connected and assembled. This step is done using screws, nuts, or other fasteners.
  4. Installing the Shelving Layers: The shelving layers on which the products to be stored will be placed must be assembled.
  5. Inspection and Adjustment: After the racking system is installed, an inspection should be performed to ensure that the system is working properly and is secure, and adjustments should be made as necessary.

Although the assembly and installation of racking systems is generally not a process that requires expertise, it must be done correctly and carefully. For large or complex racking systems in particular, it may be important to seek professional help.
